WARDOGS first impressions — is it worth your time in the beta?
I've put a lot of weekend hours into the WARDOGS beta. Here's what stands out, what needs work, who it's for, and the loadout I keep coming back to.
WARDOGS has been my Saturday and Sunday game for a few weeks now, so this is written from a lot of hours, not a first-night take.
What is WARDOGS?
A team-based tactical FPS, currently in beta ahead of launch. Squads, objectives, gunplay that punishes sloppy positioning. It sits somewhere between the run-and-gun games and the hardcore milsims — fast enough to be fun on stream, slow enough that decisions matter.
What stands out?
The gunplay. Recoil is learnable, time-to-kill is honest. When I lose a fight I usually know why, and that's the thing that keeps me coming back.
Squad play matters. Solo heroes get punished. That makes it a great game for community squads — if you're in The Clutch Club Discord you've probably already been dragged into a match with me.
It's readable. As someone with red-green colour blindness, I care a lot about whether I can actually see enemies and markers. WARDOGS does better than most out of the box, and the accessibility options are heading the right way.
What needs work?
Beta is beta. Matchmaking swings between sweaty and empty depending on the time of day (Australian evenings are fine, early mornings are a wait). A couple of maps have spawns that need another pass. Performance has improved every patch but still has the odd stutter on high settings.
Who is WARDOGS for?
If you liked the tactical side of games like The Finals or Battlefield but want less chaos and more intent, you'll enjoy it. If you want pure arcade speed, it might feel slow at first.
What loadout am I running?
My default is the aggressive entry setup — assault rifle, a fast secondary, flash and frag, extra armour. When chat votes "Sniper" on the loadout tile I switch to the marksman kit and hold angles, which is usually where the funniest clips come from. Full loadouts are on the WARDOGS hub page, and I update them after every big session.
When can you watch me play WARDOGS?
Saturdays and Sundays from about 10:30am Brisbane time (AEST, no daylight saving) until late, and most Friday nights. That's live on papakow.com, Twitch, Kick and YouTube at the same time. The schedule page converts it to your local time.
FAQ
Is WARDOGS worth playing right now? If you enjoy squad-based tactical shooters and can handle beta rough edges, yes. If you want a polished experience, wait for launch and watch the streams in the meantime.
Do I need friends to enjoy it? It's better with a squad. Join the Discord and you won't be short of one.
Will you keep streaming it after launch? If it keeps improving the way it has, absolutely. It's the game I'm most excited about this year.
