Is WARDOGS good for solo players?
Is WARDOGS good for solo players?
Yes. After a long night on OCE servers on Monday 21 September 2026, PapaKow's honest read is that WARDOGS caters to solo players more than it first looks like it does, and that's both the best and the most annoying thing about it right now.
I play the objective. I like running with a squad, holding the hot zone and making money together. But on Monday night I spent about as much time hunting lone players as I did fighting the actual enemy team, and it changed how I think about where this game is heading.
What do solo players actually do in WARDOGS?
They play the edges. Not the objective. On Monday I kept running into the same few types:
- The mine layer. One or two players who know where the FOB is going to be set up, sit outside the base and lay mines on the road so the supply trucks can't get in.
- The gate sniper. Anyone who walks out of the base gets picked off from somewhere out on the flank.
- The hot zone flanker. We'd be inside the HZ and I'd hear shots coming from outside it, killing my teammates who were doing the objective.
- The artillery hunter. More on that one below.
I wouldn't call it griefing. It's a real way to play the game. It's just annoying when you're the one holding the zone.
How do you deal with snipers and flankers outside the hot zone?
Split off and go hunt them. That's what I ended up doing on Monday, a number of times. Every time I peeled away from the zone to find where the shots were coming from, I'd find a little pocket of players sitting out on the edge and get 2 to 4 kills before heading back in. They're usually not in a squad, so they don't have anyone covering them.
That's the whole trick. Somebody on your team needs to own the edges so everyone else can own the zone.
Can solo players take out artillery in WARDOGS?
Yes, and one nearly did in front of me. I was driving back from dropping supplies when I saw an enemy truck cross the road ahead. On the map he was heading straight for one of our artillery tanks sitting outside the control zone. He pulled up at a house and I'm fairly sure he was about to hop out and sneak up with C4.
I rammed his truck and leaned on the horn. That alerted the gunner on top of the artillery tank, who opened up and eventually killed him. I gave him some grief in chat, and his reply was that he'd already killed a lot of our artillery tanks, so fair enough, we finally got him.
That's a solo player having a great night on his own terms. I have to respect it.
Do other players feel the same way?
Mostly, yes. The Steam discussions for WARDOGS line up with what I saw. One long feedback thread from a player lists "solo vs team experience" as a real problem, and says some people are having better sessions playing solo with voice chat off. The replies push back on a lot of that thread, which is fair, but the solo point keeps coming up.
So is WARDOGS worth it if you play alone?
Yes, if you're happy playing the edges. You can have a lot of fun hunting stragglers, sniping gates and chasing artillery without ever talking to anyone. If you're a solo player who wants to play the objective, you'll do better joining a squad in the lobby, because the hot zone rewards coordination.
Here's where I've landed. As much as it tilts me when I'm holding the zone and eating shots from a guy on his own out in the scrub, he's out there having fun too. I was doing exactly the same thing to his teammates twenty minutes earlier. So I guess I'm being a bit of a hypocrite. This game really does cater to everyone. The hard part for the devs is going to be balancing it so every one of those playstyles still feels fair.
I'm on WARDOGS most nights from Brisbane. Come find me in The Clutch Club, or catch the Friday night session.
You gotta stay gaming.
